A Message from Your Business Manager
Brothers and Sisters, the year 2005 is about over and it was some year with all the storms that took place, not only in our jurisdiction, but throughout the country. There were a number of members that were sent to various areas throughout the country to help with the storm outages. I have heard nothing but excellent reports on the hard dedicated work that took place. Congratulations! You make us all proud.
Assistant, Mike Priem, Local 953's Organizer has left 953 to return to this home Local. Local 953's goal at this time, is to pick up his duties with the existing work force and with the help of the membership on organizing, we can accomplish this task. From time to time, you will be called upon for assistance on organizing – please come forward when asked.
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy new year!
Solidarity forever and God Bless!

The push for “The Wisconsin Health Care Plan” is under way. The Wisconsin AFL-CIO has put together a health care plan, gathered all the data, and is in the process of presenting the information to any company that expresses interest in the health plan. They have covered most of the eastern side of the state of Wisconsin and are now looking for interested companies on the western side of the state. These companies can be union or non-union since this plan will cover basically everyone in the state. So, if you or your family members work for a company that is having problems with the cost of health insurance they need to know about the Wisconsin Health Care Plan and the money that this plan can save them. Spread the word!

Seasons Greetings Brothers & Sisters!
Some 57 million U.S. workers say they would join a union if they could. But when workers try to gain a voice on the job, employers respond with intimidation, harassment and retaliation. And our labor laws are too weak to stop them. The Employee Free Choice Act would ensure that when a majority of employees in a workplace decide to form a union, they can do so without the debilitating obstacles employers now use to block their free choice.
Specifically, the Employee Free Choice Act would strengthen protections for workers' freedom to form unions by requiring employers to recognize a union once a majority of workers signed cards authorizing union representation. It also would provide for mediation and arbitration of first-contract disputes and authorize stronger penalties for employers that violate the legal rights of workers seeking to form unions or negotiate first contracts.
Please send a message to your U.S. senators and representative urging them to co-sponsor the Employee Free Choice Act.

On September 6, 2005 , Cooperative line crews from all over Wisconsin started their journey south to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in Louisiana . They were working with over 1,000 other cooperative line workers from across the nation at Washington-St. Tammany Electric Cooperative, north of New Orleans to bring electricity to more than 47,000 members. To all 953 members that went south to help in the hurricane relief – “Great Job!”
On October 12-14, 2005, I along with Dale Blank, Chad Bilderback, Randy Michel, and Don Wiener, attended the Utility Workers Coalition Conference. Topics of discussion were: Wisconsin Health Care Plan, Utility Operations, Generation, Gas Distribution and Transmission Distribution. The conference was very good informational.
Saturday, February 11, 2006, is the date set for Local 953's 5th Annual Ice Fishing Derby.
I would encourage all members to try to attend, it's a great time!
